Where's the capital? A geographical essay

This paper is inspired by Thomas Piketty's book Capital in the Twenty-First Century. Piketty does a wonderful job of tracing income and wealth over time, and relating changes to trends of economic and population growth, and drawing out the implications for inequality, inheritance and even democracy. But, he says relatively little about where capital is located, how capital accumulation in one place relies on activities elsewhere, how capital is urbanized with advanced capitalism and what life is like in spaces without capital. This paper asks 'where is the geography in Capital' or 'where is the geography of capital in Capital'? Following Piketty's lead, the paper develops its analysis through a number of important novels. It examines, first, the debate that Jane Austen ignored colonialism and slavery in her treatment of nineteenth century Britain, second, how Balzac and then Zola provide insight to the urban political economy of capital later in the century, ...

The history of capital cities in Modern Greece. This brief journey through the three dominant capital cities of the newly liberated Greek state and the constant relocations of the seat of the government illustrates that the decision to choose and name a city as “capital city” may not be as “innocent” as it might seem. Politics, history, culture, and ideologies play a crucial role in the of process of establishing the capital of the state. In conclusion, since the capital is a powerful symbol for the state and its government, this process can be imbued with emotional connotations. Symbolisms were dominant in the case of Athens’ self-(re)invention. We should not overlook or forget that the city was made capital in the context of the romantic revival of the glory of Ancient Athens, armed with the memory of Ancient Greece.

Urban Form and Urban Capital -- How spatial

2009 •

Lars Marcus

When this is written, the world holds its breath, waiting for the US to decide on a plan to save the countrys (and the worlds in prolongation) financial market. What and who will dictate growth and prosperity internationally in the future are at stake. This is also a moment for developing deeper understanding of underlying spatial prerequisites for the interdependency of local, regional and global knowledge driven economies. This paper introduces a proposed research project with an aim to analyse the relation between the spatial constitution of urban regions and their relative success in the international competition for talent, capital and investments. Spatial analysis will be conducted both on the macro level: the relation and accessibility between urban regional nodes and on the micro level: the spatial structure of the urban nodes themselves. The project is a trans-disciplinary collaboration between economic geography and urban morphology and has the following objectives: one, t...

Our research will make an attempt to analyse the institution of capital cities at the functional and symbolic levels. Not only do capitals serve as headquarters for government bodies, but their functions also include the representation of a nation to itself and its environment. Capitals are the idealized image of a nation and national history, a nation in miniature of sorts. This idea is to verify the assumption that there is an additional mechanism of nation-building, which manifests itself in the creation of an ideal national image and opposing it to peripheral marginality

Political Centrality of ‘Capital’ Cities

purendra prasad

In this phase of neoliberalization, cities are witnessing large-scale transformation under the influence of expanding capital and new technologies. Despite growing inequalities and segregations, there has been renewed interest over the last decade or so in building new cities variously labelled ‘smart’, ‘green’, or ‘integrated’. This chapter attempts to explain how ‘state’ has become more prominent in shaping the conditions for capital accumulation and circulation, especially in leveraging its control over land for certain political interests. Taking ideas from Henri Lefebvre, David Harvey, and Neil Brenner, the chapter elaborates on rescaling strategies, and the way a capital city has become the critical place where one could see how physical space, political power, and the logic of accumulation play out in the neoliberal context. The purpose in analysing three cities is to explain the underlying forces that have been contribut- ing to the current forms of capitalist urbanization.
