Impressive Rainfall Totals Overnight - More To Come. (2024)

Our first fall-like cold front moved southward into southeastern New Mexico overnight and early this morning. Bringing with it much cooler temperatures, low clouds, and very heavy rainfall to parts of the local area.

The Roswell Portable Raws (Remote Automated Weather Station) #1 located east of Roswell and northwest of Caprock recorded 3.36" of rainfall over the past 24 hours as of 9 AM this morning. The 8-Mile Draw Raws located northeast of Roswell reported 2.88". A CoCoRaHS Station located 8.1 miles north of Roswell reported 2.65". And the Bitter Lakes Wildlife Refuge reported 2.38".

A CoCoRaHS Station located 2.9 miles east-southeast of Portales reported 2.40".

MRMS rainfall totals east of Roswell and west of Caprock estimated some 6" of rain may have fallen. While nearly 4" fell north of Roswell in rural northeastern Chaves County.

Numerous showers and thunderstorms are in our local forecast today into Labor Day for southeastern New Mexico including the Guadalupe, Sacramento, and Capitan mountains. Fairly widespread rainfall totals today through the first of next week should end up being in the .75" to 1.50"" range. Localized heavy totals could easily be in the 2" to 4" range.

Local flash flooding will be a concern today into Labor Day for the area. Especially with any thunderstorm that dumps heavy rainfall in a short period of time. Some thunderstorms may train (repeat storms over the same location) and this will aggravate the flash flood potential in those areas. Again the burn scar areas in the mountains, in particular the Ruidoso area, will be the most sustainable to flash flooding.

Flood Watches remain in effect today into this evening for parts of the northern mountains, north central and northeast New Mexico, Chaves, and Lincoln Counties.

Our forecast high temps across the southeastern plains will range from the mid-upper 70's to near 80 today into Labor Day. These temps will average some 10 degrees to 18 degrees below normal for the local area.

Highs in the Sacramento mountains will range from near 70 in the Ruidoso area today into Sunday and the mid-upper 60's on Labor Day. Cloudcroft will see highs near 60 today through Sunday and the mid-50s on Labor Day.

Fall is in the air for sure. Now can we just get a much-needed soaking rain over those areas (mainly the southeastern plains) that have been left out so far this year?
